Give Your Memory A Workout With Brain Aerobics - DANIA BEACH (CBS4)
We all know the importance of physical fitness. But few of us may consider giving our brains a workout. CBS4 Health Specialist Dr. Sean Kenniff says there's a local center where folks can shape up their mental muscle. Like most Americans, Louis Lentini said he noticed his memory was not as sharp as it used to be as he got older.
"It started when I was in my early 50's and it just progressively got worse. I forget things," said Lentini. "It got to a point where it was so bad I had to make a list of all the things I had to take with me when I left my house and I taped it on my door." That's why he decided to join Brain Aerobics in Aventura where clients have a personal trainer that guides them through various exercises.
A computer software program developed by psychologists and computer scientists improves 14-cognitive skills including awareness, divided attention, spatial perception and visual short-term memory. A vibration machine then helps the body and the mind by contracting muscles. "When that happens you're sending blood flow to your body, you increase the oxygen that goes into your brain," said trainer Libbat Shaham.
The final component to the training is relaxation. "Relaxation is important because stress is very detrimental to memory. And what we do is we give a relaxation component in the program to help increase oxygen to the brain," added Shaham.
Trainers at the Brain Aerobics Center say for best results clients should train 20 minutes a day three times a week. Since Lentini began this regimen a couple of months ago, he's amazed at how his mental stamina is shaping up. As for that reminder list Lentini keeps on his door? "I took the list off the door at the beginning of the week because I don't need it," said Lentini.
